The Last Litter Initiative aims to help community members spay and neuter their personal pets after an unintended pet pregnancy. CRA will offer a temporary foster home for a pregnant, owned pet and ensure that she and her puppies are cared for until they are spayed or neutered. Once all medical needs have been finalized, the puppies are adopted into thoroughly vetted families. If in the best interest of the mother dog, after she has been spayed, she will be reunited with her family at no cost to them. Our goal is always to lessen the burden of overpopulation on our community to the best of our ability. A spay-abort option will be the priority whenever it is not medically contraindicated for the emotional wellbeing of the mother dog and we have the support and authorization of the surrendering family.
These efforts also give us the opportunity to utilize the experience of our volunteers to ensure that the puppies are raised thoughtfully and go out into the world as amazing family pets who can serve as ambassadors for rescue dogs everywhere.
Even in instances where puppies have already been brought into the world prior to help being sought - we will take over care of mom and puppies for in-need citizens and provide the same services. At this time, we are limited to only taking one litter at a time due to availability of foster homes. If you want to help us expand the Last Litter Initiative and you're willing to host a litter of puppies and a mamma at your home, please sign up to become a foster!
Chicago Rescue Authority stands firmly in our humanity and will always offer assistance to community members without judgement of their circumstances. We will educate through kindness and do our best to ensure that animals who are loved and cared for get to stay with the families that love them. With the number of dogs dying in shelters every day, our responsibility is to ensure fewer litters of puppies and fewer dogs in need of rescue. The Last Litter Initiative helps us meet those goals in multiple ways.
As minimizing the pet overpopulation crisis is foundational to our mission, all of our rescued dogs through Chicago Rescue Authority will be altered prior to adoption. This is our responsibility as an animal rescue and further enforced by the parameters of our licensure.
In addition to the commitment of only adopting out altered animals, we strive to help members of the public experiencing financial constraints spay or neuter their animals to prevent unnecessary litters. Resources for this program are limited by funding and building new partnerships with veterinary clinics across the city. Interested individuals may submit an application for aid and they will be processed weekly.
