We are excited about your interest in adopting a dog from Chicago Rescue Authority! Adopting a rescue animal can be an incredibly fulfilling experience, and our adoption process is designed to ensure the best match for each potential home. Prospective adopters should reside within a 3-hour radius of Chicago and are required to complete an adoption application, provide a vet reference, and participate in a matching call. These steps are essential to gather comprehensive information and make the optimal placement for you or your family.
Given the unique qualities of each dog, including personality, temperament, energy level, compatibility with kids and other animals, and medical needs, we are very thorough and considerate when making a forever-home match. Our commitment is to thoughtfully place each dog in a suitable adoptive home, aiming for a permanent and loving environment.
Please remember that adopting a pet is a big decision, requiring time, money, and an estimated commitment of 10-15 years. While it can be rewarding, it's important to think through your decision thoroughly before bringing a companion into your life.
If you're ready to welcome your new best friend, initiate the adoption process today!

This call is essential to ensure that we can successfully pair the adopter and the dog in our care with their ideal match. Please prepare for this call to be approximately 30 minutes long and remember to be open minded in case the dog you're hoping for doesn't end up being the right fit
After processing your application, a team member will contact you to inform you of the outcome and whether you have been successfully matched with the dog of your choice. In cases where we have more qualified applicants than available dogs, rest assured that we will continue efforts to find a suitable match, either with another currently available dog or in the future.
Chicago Rescue Authority is a 100% volunteer, non-profit organization. We will make every effort to schedule your matching call in the most timely manner. Please be patient with us…the dogs need our time too.
We will not discuss adoption details regarding any particular dog if you have not yet applied to adopt.
All dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all age appropriate vaccines prior to adoption
You will not be invited to participate in a formal meet & greet with a pet until after your application has been submitted and approved. Occasionally there are adoption events in which a dog you are interested in adopting may be present, but meeting the dog ahead of placing an application for them in no way gives you priority in the adoption process.
We do not operate our adoptions under a "first-come, first-serve" protocol. The only individuals who may be given priority in adoption are the foster parents if they decide to adopt the pet during it's hold period before they are listed as "adoptable". Once adoptable, all applications will be weighed equally and the best fit for the pet will be determined.
Chicago Rescue Authority reserves the right to require other dogs in the family to be present for a meet-and-greet/adoption appointment to ensure that they are compatible with one another. Recommendations may be made based on the personality of the adoptable dog or another pet in your home to best navigate a successful introduction of a new family member.
